United Students of Maastricht (USM) - LAW

Dear fellow students,

You want your voice to be heard and see changes in your favour?  Yes, we want that too and that’s why you should consider the United Student of Maastricht (USM) for the UM elections!

The United Students of Maastricht is one of the most international student representative parties at Maastricht University. We are a group of students with diverse backgrounds, different study tracks, and various nationalities. Our engagement at Maastricht University as well as our willingness to improve our university is what brought us together.

Since 2019, USM is representing student interests within the University Councils. Through our platform, we enable students to start their own projects with the goal of improving our beloved community.

Our main goal is to achieve a diverse student representation around all UM faculties. Furthermore, we want to strengthen political discourse and accomplish positive changes for our student community within and outside the university buildings.

Obviously, the pandemic has left its marks on the university life, we once knew, and emphasised the issues that need to be tackled to improve student life in the future. So, let’s rebuild our community together! Let’s go even a step further and have a long-lasting positive effect on our university and community!

Together, we can build a student community, that is:

  • international, diverse and inclusive
  • fostering student well-being by tackling issues such as mental health, study financing, and             housing
  • advocating for a sustainable university
  • promoting an educational system that enables students to become open-minded as well as           socially responsible global citizens
  • ensuring a degree that boosts your employability in the future job market
  • improving UM facilities and common spaces to create a welcoming learning environment

Tim Draband

Tim Draband

Hi, my name is Tim and I'm currently in my second year of the European Law School LL.B. I am running for both the faculty and the university council, representing the United Students of Maastricht.

If elected, I would work on streamlining access to mental health support free of any stigma and unreasonable burden, a topic important both to me, and many others, especially considering the events of the past year. Furthermore, I would prioritise maintaining and furthering the inclusive character of our faculty by implementing equitable solutions, in order to ensure it represents a welcoming and nurturing environment for everyone.

Milica Mijajlovic

Milica Mijajlovic

Hi, I am Milica and I am a 2nd year ELS student. I decided to take on the chance to be ellected for the University Council and/or the Faculty of Law Council because I believe I can bring about change in both administrative aspects of the law faculty that worsened due to the Pandemic  and diversify the Councils. As a women from Montenegro that has lived 4 years in Switzerland and the last two years in the Netherlands I am convident I will be able diversify these institutions by increasing gender equality and be a voice for Maastrichts international community.

Per Mahrenholz

Per Mahrenholz

Hi, I am Per Mahrenholz and I am a first-year European Law Bachelor student. I was born in Germany but grew up in Brussels in very international surroundings.

This year, I am running for both the University Council and the Law Faculty Council where I am candidating for more transparency between the faculties and the students, notably when it comes to easier access to individual feedback for assignments and exams, as well as improving student and staff wellbeing, especially when transitioning back to education on-site next academic year.

Together, we can achieve everything, vote for USM!

Herman Johansson

Herman Johansson

Hi, my name is Herman Johansson, I'm origionally from Sweden and currently completing my second year of the European Law School program. This year I'm running for both the law faculty council as well as the university council.

If elected, my immediate focus would be towards community building post Covid-19, improvement of faculty facilities for student with disabilities, and creating a transparent student portal for internships as to provide students with better knowledge of the labour market. Together with USM, I would work as possible to improve the faculty so as to ensure an even better academic year in 2021/2022.

Lucian Schwartz-Croft

Lucian Schwartz-Croft

My name is Lucian and I'm a first year ELS student from the UK.

Something many students have found to be lacking this year is clear and effective communication from the university. Especially in difficult times like these, we need transparency and a stonger connection between students and their tutors, both to make interactions feel more human and to help students succeed. I hope to make effective and noticable changes to combat these issues in the near future.

Marts Ivaskis

Marts Ivaskis

I'm Marts, a 2nd year ELS student, and I am campaigning for:

-Student financial wellbeing. My previous projects in this area such as StudyConnect, the USM Housing Project and 56hourrule.nl can show what I'm fighting against - the 56-hour DUO rule and lack of action regarding housing.

-Election procedures and voters' privacy. I think we all hate receiving dm's on Whatsapp, spamming group chats, even voter fraud and cheating. This year, I continue my fight for a standardised election procedure.

-Social pro-activity. Bringing light to discrimination in UM, curriculum changes, collaborating with local foodbanks, engaging with the refugee project here in Maastricht.
